Arlanda Expansion Stockholm Arlanda is to be expanded with a new pier at the airport’s terminal 5, which is to ensure that the airport can receive an increasing number of long-haul aircrafts as well as European flights. The project is to be concluded in 2018 and is part of a SEK 13 billion 2040-investment plan for Arlanda. The expansion also includes a new operations area, which is to handle airport maintenance, vehicles and equipment, as well as an expansion of security, commercial areas in terminal 5 and new parking lots. Commenting on the expansion plan, Arlanda Airport Director Kjell-Åke Westin states, “Since we opened 14 new intercontinental routes in 2013, we have seen that there is a growth in the related intercontinental lines. We have a shortage of gates to handle these large aircrafts. Therefore, we will use a part of the new pier to make it possible for us to handle e.g. Airbus 380 and other larger airplanes”.
